The university’s announcement says the Tutor Trust partnership is entering its third year and has been extended for another year.

Which schools and pupils the figures cover

The release records support for more than 400 pupils across 19 Salford schools. It does not specify the assessment cohort’s academic year or subject-by-subject sample sizes.

Student tutoring results in reading and maths

The release compares the 77% reading figure with 62% for disadvantaged pupils in Salford. That is a difference of 15 percentage points, rather than a 15% relative increase.

These are reported attainment rates, not a measurement of how much each pupil improved or proof that tutoring alone caused the results.

Why the earlier report is not directly comparable

Page 22 of Tutor Trust’s 2024/25 impact report gives a separate account of the university partnership. It records support for more than 400 young people across 15 Salford primary schools.

In that report, 64% of disadvantaged pupils receiving tuition met the reading standard and 65% met the maths standard. The corresponding Salford disadvantaged-pupil benchmarks were 63% and 59%.

The report uses provisional 2024/25 Department for Education benchmarks and notes that its pupil categorisation differs from the government’s disadvantage criteria.

The publications describe different school counts and outcomes. Without a matching cohort year and pupil definitions in the newer release, they do not establish a like-for-like annual comparison.
